Welcome to Bear Creek Hounds of Moreland, GA

What is a “point to point”?

A “point to point” is a form of horseracing that, like a steeplechase, takes place over fences on the turf, instead of on a track. While some races on the card at a point to point are for professional jockeys, some races are limited to amateur riders, usually people who fox hunt (a steeplechase is limited to professional riders).

Like a steeplechase meet, a point to point includes races on the flat and over fences. What makes a point to point extra exciting are the amateur riders and the fact that many of the horses have never raced before.

The first steeplechase was run in Ireland more than 250 years ago. Chasing from “steeple to steeple” or “point to point” began in 1752 when neighbors challenged each other to race across the Irish countryside, jumping fences, ditches and whatever was in their path. By keeping the steeple of the church in sight, the riders could see their finishing point.

Today, point to points are usually held by hunt clubs, and most of the races are for horses that follow the hounds. The horses have to be certified by a Master of Foxhounds that they have hunted for at least five days in the season.

Many point to points also include races for children and ponies.

What is a “tailgate”?

A “tailgate” is a picnic served from the rear of a vehicle. Since point-to-point and steeplechase races are usually day-long affairs that take place outdoors far from any fast-food chains, spectators bring picnics, often extremely elaborate. The practice has spread, becoming popular social gatherings at sporting events of all kinds.

The Tailgating Competition for the Bear Creek Hounds Point to Point will be judged on the following categories:
- Hunt Country Classic:  True hunt style. Think of Chastain Park as catered by Blackberry Farms in conjunction with Martha Stewart.
- Galloping Gourmet: For the chefs in the crowd. Dazzle the judges with your epicurean skills.
- Southern ‘Horsepitality’: Good ol’ comfort food — with an equine theme such as “horse” d'oeuvres, saddle of lamb, etc.
What to wear?

Two words: warm and sporting. This is an outdoor activity in February, and dressing warmly would be prudent. Most spectators are usually attired in country-casual clothes with an equestrian theme. Boots, hats, gloves and scarves are usually worn. Jeans are OK. Think natural fabrics.

What to expect?

Fun! Like the Atlanta Steeplechase in the spring, a point to point is a big, outdoor party with spectators gathered to cheer on their favorite horses and riders. There will be food, drink and socializing – plus a horse race or two. So we encourage you to bring your friends and enjoy a day in the country.

What are the Bear Creek Hounds?

The Bear Creek Hounds is a hunting club continues a centuries-old sport in which riders on horseback follow a pack of hounds as they chase coyote and fox. Most of the Bear Creek members are lifelong horsemen and women who enjoy watching the hounds work together as they try to follow the scent of the elusive quarry. They also thrill to gallop across country, jumping any fences in their way.

Can we have fun?

You betcha!
